Burnout is one of the main reasons why employees take time off work or look for other employment. With nearly half of those surveyed saying they feel burnt out at work, it’s a problem which is affecting all employers, including higher education. In the fast-paced environment of campus life, administrators play a crucial role in ensuring smooth operations and engagement within student communities. However, the constant juggling of responsibilities can often lead to burnout, especially during busy times of year.

Here are some practical tips to help reduce burnout and sustain a healthy work-life balance:

1. Make time for yourself and your team

Team members need a work/life balance and employers should seek to build a culture which supports this. This is part of having a supportive team environment which helps employee wellbeing. Also be sure to make time for YOU and the activities that you enjoy.

2. Leverage technology

NASPA’s 2022 Compass Report shows that 72% of professionals anticipate having an increased focus on leveraging technology as part of their current role. Ensure that your technology works for you! For example, in your Ready Education platforms, there are a number of things you can do:

  • Schedule key messages ahead of time.
  • Analyze your data - see what is and isn’t working so you aren’t devoting time to communications which aren’t leading to higher engagement.

In CampusGroups:

  • Take advantage of built-in automations, such as workflows and approval processes to eliminate manual tasks.
  • Use templates for recurring events to make the event creation process faster and more efficient.

3. Be intentional with processes and procedures

Practice admin roadmapping, which was developed in partnership with Patrick Fina at Denison University and shared on our recent webinar on reducing burnout. Consider the following elements:

  • Process - what is the process you need to streamline?
  • End users - who are the stakeholders?
  • Ultimate decision maker - who are the decision makers?
  • Unintended impacts - what are the things that may be indirectly impacted?
  • Critical information - what else is missing?

4. Take advantage of our Help Center and Resources

Our extensive Campus App Knowledge Base, and CampusGroups Help Center are a great first step. From how to get started through to best practice articles, they are a great resource. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, our Client Support Team is available 24/7.
